KEYBOARD SCANNER MODULE KBS/E1
The SSV KBS/E1 is a small size keyboard scanner module for matrix keyboards with up to 64 keys (8 * 8 matrix). The KBS/E1 is based on Microchip´s PIC 16C57 microcontroller. The PIC 16C57µC includes one interface for the 8 * 8 keyboard matrix, one interface for an external PC/XT or PC/AT keyboard and one HOST CPU keyboard interface with PC/XT or PC/AT mode. Over the PIC 16C57µC firmware, the microcontroller offers a keyboard wedge: Data from the external keyboard and from the keyboard matrix are controlled by the 16C57µC and transmitted over a serial link to the HOST CPU keyboard interface.

Together with a PC/104 CPU/SBC or other industrial single board computers (SBCs) the KBS/E1 is a solution for industrial PC front panel keyboards. With the two connectors KEYMATRIX OUT and KEYMATRIX IN the KBS/E1 supports matrix keyboards with up to 8 rows and 8 columns (8 * 8 matrix) and the maximum of 64 keys. The connector EXT. KEYBOARD is the interface for an external standard PC/XT or PC/AT keyboard. The internal keyboard wedge function of the KBS/E1 allow the simultan operation of the matrix keyboard and the external PC/XT or PC/AT keyboard. If the user presses a key on the matrix keyboard or the external PC keyboard, the KBS/E1 transmit a scan code over the connector HOST CPU to the single board computer.

Many of the PC/104 CPU´s and SBC´s offers a 10- pin utility connector with the same pinout for speaker, reset, keyboard, real- time clock battery input, and power good signals. The KBS/E1 10- pin connector HOST CPU uses the same pinout. The SSV KBS/E1 also offers a real- time battery option and a small speaker option. With the KBS/E1 battery, you can supply the AT compatible real time clock to maintain date and time settings of the PC/104 CPU or SBC in the absense of system power. It is also possible to connect a external real- time clock battery over the KBS/E1 connector EXT. BATT. and a external reset switch for the PC/104 CPU or SBC over the connector RESET SWITCH.
